#99 - Ra Ra Riot / Moby
Indie Rock Playlist - #99
Artist: Ra Ra Riot
Song: Too Dramatic
Album: The Orchard (2010)
I really enjoyed this album. The Orchard is one of those albums that I listen to from front to back instead of individual songs. I highly recommend it. I wish I could have put them higher but I believe the songs from the album go together as a whole better than individual parts.
Maybe I should do a list of my favorite albums in the future.
CI Jukebox - #99
Artist: Moby f. Gwen Stefani
Song: Southside
Album: Play (1999)
Here is a classic that takes me back to middle school. I never really listened to No Doubt at the time so this was my first introduction to Gwen Stefani.
I will release the #98's early next week. Have a great weekend!!

#100 - Sufjan Stevens / Tom Cochrane
Time to start off the official top 100 songs. I finalized this list about a week ago and I already want to make changes to it. I'm not going to though because then it would become a never-ending and very time consuming process.
So here we go. The two songs that barely made the cut.

Indie Rock Playlist - #100
The Dress Looks Nice on You by Sufjan Stevens
As you will see from the performance below, Sufjan is a bit eccentric. I don't mean that in a negative way. I believe that the best musicians are the ones who stray away from the norm, though his recent record has been too peculiar for my taste. I hope you enjoy this song though. This may or may not be his last appearance on this list.
CI Jukebox - #100
Life Is A Highway by Tom Cochrane
Here is a fantastic song from 1991. If I remember correctly, this song was featured on VH1's top one-hit wonders list. It reached #6 on the Billboard chart.
Thanks for visiting. I hope to post a new entry every couple days. I'll post links on my twitter (@adambeat) when I do.

Honorable Mentions - CI Jukebox
Here is the second half of the Honorable Mentions. These are from the pop/top 40 playlist dubbed "The CI Jukebox." In all honesty I could probably post endless amounts of videos and call them "Honorable Mentions" but I gotta start somewhere.
Sorry if the links start with adverts. Most of this list is going to come off of VEVO so it's kind of unavoidable. Also, Warner Brothers are jerks and won't let me embed some of their videos so you might have to navigate away from this blog a couple times.
Note: I included TRL stats as I could find them. TRL ran from 1998-2008 so any song not in that range obviously doesn't have anything. And yes, there is a TRL archive.
I hope you all enjoy these music videos as much as I did.
Artist: Barenaked Ladies
Song: Pinch Me
Album: Maroon (2000)
Awards: Pinch Me was nominated for a Grammy in 2001.

Awards: 14-times Platinum, one of the most successful albums of all time.

Make sure you keep an eye out for the girl digging in her crotch during the second verse. She's the one on the left.
Artist: Butthole Surfers
Song: Pepper
Album: Electriclarryland (1996)
Origin of their name via Wikipedia:
The band did not begin as the Butthole Surfers, although they did have a song of that title, possibly an early version of 1984's "Butthole Surfer". This changed at their first paid concert, when an announcer forgot what the band was called and used the song title for the group’s name. They decided to keep the moniker, and have largely been billed as such ever since. Prior to that, the Surfers performed under a different name at every live show. Early aliases included the Dick Clark Five, Nine cm Worm Makes Own Food, the Vodka Family Winstons, and many others.
The name has long been a source of trouble for the band. Many clubs, newspapers, radio, and TV stations refuse to print or mention their full name, and instead opted to use "B.H. Surfers", or other abbreviations.
Artist: Deadeye Dick
Song: New Age Girl
Album: New Age Girl - Single (1994)
Those of you who are familiar with Dumb and Dumber will recognize this song.

Music Project - Top 100's
For those of you who know me, most of you know that I know the lyrics to way more songs than the average person should. If I'm at a bar and a 90's boy band comes on the jukebox, 95% chance I played it. I'll also sing nearly any song at karaoke night. My brother posted a video of me singing "Waterfalls" by TLC at a bar in Key West last winter (video at the end of the post). I've been known to sing some Lisa Loeb, NKOTB, Backstreet Boys, Michelle Branch, Spin Doctors, etc. Pretty much any pop song that was even remotely popular in the past 25 to 30 years.
Some attribution is owed to Luke Florence and Matt Barnes. Currently, they are both compiling lists of their top 100 favorite movies. Here are links for their lists.

I guess my knowledge of music stems from the fact that I lived 30-40 minutes from high school so the radio and CD player were the main things to keep me entertained. Now, my iPod keeps me entertained for my near hour commute to work six days a week. If you drive I-70 and you see a guy singing his little heart out in a Lincoln Town Car. That's me.
Now while I don't try to hide the fact that I enjoy a lot of music that most people would consider "awesomely bad" or just "bad," there is another set of music that I listen to that I genuinely value and would defend to no end.
I tried to compile a list of my top 100 favorite songs over the winter and I had an incredibly difficult time even getting started. How do I rank songs like "I Want It That Way" or "All You Wanted" against the songs of Josh Ritter, matt pond PA or Bon Iver? In my mind, there is really no way to go about it. It's a case of apples and oranges or yin and yang. It's two groups of songs that I enjoy for two different reasons. The former because they are fun and remind me of good times. The latter because I value them as some of the best songs written.
So here is my solution; two separate lists, 100 songs on each list. One list for pop music/top 40 and another for "indie music," for the lack of a better term. I'll post a song from each list every day or so until I make it all the way through.
I hope that along the way one list of songs will take you back to the old TRL days, maybe back to college or simply be a rediscovery of an old favorite. I hope that the other list can help you discover a new favorite song or even a new favorite band.
Have a wonderful Labor Day Weekend!
